Riyadh. Eight Kuwaitis and two Indonesians were killed Monday when the Kuwaiti family’s vehicle overturned in the eastern Saudi city of Hafr al-Batin, the head of the traffic safety department said.

The accident, which also left two people injured, took place when the driver lost control over the 4x4 SUV when one of the tires exploded. The family was heading to Mecca to perform the Umrah, or the minor pilgrimage, said Abdullah al-Shimri.

One man, four women and three children from the same family died along with their two Indonesian maids.

A report released last year by the Interior Ministry’s traffic safety department said that 6,485 people were killed in road accidents in Saudi Arabia in 2008.
