Three people have been named as suspects in the mad rush for BlackBerry phones on Nov. 25 and the Kebayoran Baru police chief was removed from his post because of his connection to the incident.

The event organizer, Erwin, was named as a suspect last week. South Jakarta police Sr. Comr. Imam Sugianto said on Thursday that police had named two more suspects: Head of Security at Pacific Place Mall Markus and Security Consultant for BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Terry Burkey.

“Markus and Terry were named as suspects because of negligence,” Imam told the Jakarta Globe.

On Nov. 25 at least 90 people fainted and three were injured as a thousand people broke through a barricade at Pacific Place Mall to get their hands on the latest BlackBerry, the Bold 9790, that was being sold at a deep discount.

During the event, the phones were sold for Rp 2.3 million ($250) to the first 1,000 customers. The discount attracted a huge crowd, some of who had started queuing the day before.

All of the suspects were charged with negligence that caused injury to others. The maximum sentence is nine months in jail.

The suspects were not detained, but were obliged to report to the police station.

Imam said Terry did not manage the event according to procedure.

“Terry was the one who asked all the people to get in, so those who got the [red] brace and those who didn’t were scrambling.”

Meanwhile, Markus was considered to be negligent because he did not inform police of the details of the event and did not estimate the number of people who would come.

“Markus was the one that signed the permit [request], but he did not put the estimated number of people who would come,” Imam said. “He did not explain about the 50 percent promotion.”

Imam said that police might come up with more suspects depending on the investigation results.

Meanwhile, after the removal of intelligence unit head of the Kebayoran Baru police, Comr. Hando Wibowo, the Kebayoran Baru police chief was also removed from his position.

Jakarta police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar said that Hando was removed because he failed to carry out his duty as police chief.

“As police chief, he was the one responsible for this event. He did not carry out a controlling function well, so he is being moved to staff position.”

No one has been appointed as the new police chief.
