My guess is immigration were holding out for more than he has got. No its public who knows.

Misalamas - as others have said he has seemingly tried all avenues including letters to the President.

One can only assume if he is bold enough to go this open route he is squeaky clean.

The kids seem to want to be there with him after all mum has done a bunk - his threat is just to get it in the media and hopefully a resolution. I dont think he would do it -

I think the key question is where is mum?? If she is under the patio he would probably have the passports so who can say, but that is probably the key route for Pak Polici - but hey Eli might be broke IE no help from the servants of democracy

Replacement passports have to be santioned by both parents BTW for mixed kids without dual nationality it is a long process. We lost our oldest a few years ago... NIGHTmare. No we have lost it thats why we need a replacement. Yes Pak but where is it?.....and so on - took about 10 weeks plus plus $$$$$

I fully agree with you BilboBaggins, that in any other countries, Eli would be fully entitled to permanent resident. Perhaps we just see and wait what is the real truth behind all this. The 4 children are the main concern here, they deserve to be cared and protected. And there are a lot of unfair laws and regulations need to be revised in the Indonesian immigration concerning the mix marriage.

The guy has been married and , having 4 daughters up to 11 years old, has probably lived in Bali for quite a while.

Why does Indonesia make it so difficult for a person in his position to live here? It is actually a human rights issue.

He would be entitled to permanent residence , and if he desired, citizenship in any developed country in the world, after living there for 2 or 3 years.

If it was not for inhuman immigration regulations he would not be in such a desperate situation.

For those who criticize him, you don't know his position, he may not have any intention of doing it but it is about the only card he has left to play to stay with his children.

It is a bit suspicious though that no reason is stated for his impending deportation. Lost or stolen passports are easy to replace, although the children's would be difficult without the wife's support, unless they are American citizens.

Anyway Unless you have been in his position I doubt you can imagine his despair, I sure can't

tragic, maybe the wife is deadbeat, but he corssed a loner, but this guy crossed a line if he has infact threthened to kill his kids. Even the threat is of that no matter the circumstances or despration level is simply not accepable.

Would be interesting to hear a bit more of the background. If Eli's and his kid's passport were stolen I am quite sure the US Embassy would issue new ones. So what is it that is not said???

An American man in Bali has threatened to kill himself and his four children if he is forced to the leave the country without them.

Eli Gattenio, 50, lives with his four daughters, aged three to 11, in a villa in Seminyak following his divorce from an Indonesian woman, Sari Soraya Ruka, in May 2010.

After the divorce, Gattenio faces deportation, but he is unable to take his children to the United States with him.

In protest, the father has locked himself and his four daughters — Indigo, 11, Hope and Joy, both 9, and Nadia, 3 — inside the villa since Wednesday. All the doors and windows have been bolted shut.

Gattenio on Thursday threatened to kill himself and his daughter by lighting a gas canister to cause an explosion.

He said he had been taking care of his daughters on his own.

“My former wife took my passport and my children’s passports. I don’t know where she is now, she could be in Bali or Bekasi. She also took everything I had and put her name on it, I have nothing left but my children,” Gattenio said on Thursday.

He said he had sought help from various institutions to allow him to the leave the country with his children.

“I have filed a report to the police, the US Consulate, the Bali Immigration Office and spoken to local and foreign journalists,” Gattenio said.

“I have sent a letter to the presidents [President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and US President Barack Obama] two months ago but there has been no follow up. I am waiting for responses from the presidents or they must allow us [he and his children] to die together,” he said.

Gattenio recently tried to kill himself by jumping from the rooftop of the villa, but security officers managed to persuade him otherwise.

Kuta Police were not available for comment.
