The United States has released $300,000 in immediate aid for the victims of the deadly earthquake that struck Indonesia's Sumatra island and has set aside another $3 million dollars for long term recovery.

“Through our Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, we immediately released $300,000 to help provide for the most immediate and pressing needs,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said.

“In addition, we set aside an additional $3 million to provide further assistance once an assessment has been made of the disaster,” he said.

US President Barack Obama also issued a statement about the disaster, saying he was “deeply moved by the suffering and loss of life” in Sumatra.

“My administration has been in touch with the government of Indonesia to make it clear that the United States stands ready to help in this time of need, and I’ve ordered my administration to coordinate with the ongoing relief and recovery efforts there,” Obama said.

“Indonesia is an extraordinary country that’s known extraordinary hardship from natural disasters. I know firsthand that the Indonesian people are strong and resilient and have the spirit to overcome this enormous challenge. And as they do, they need to know that America will be their friend and partner,” he said.
