Jakarta. Veteran actor Pong Harjatmo was arrested by security officers at the Parliament Building in Jakarta after spray painting the roof in a protest against the government's lack of democratic progress.
Pong, 68, spray painted the words “honest,” “fair” and “firm” on the rooftop before he was detained by 3 security officers at 12 a.m.
The actor, who has starred in more than 50 movies since 1970, said his actions were based on his disappointment with the House of Representatives (DPR) and the government.
“Neither the DPR nor the government has ever solved a problem such as the Bank Century scandal, the gas cylinder explosions and now, many legislators play truant,” Pong told reporters.
He said legislators were immune to media critics.
“Neither printed words nor broadcast news can no longer affect the legislators. Something needs to be done,” Pong said, adding that his action was not an attempt to permanently damage state property. “Just repaint it and it'll be OK,” he said.
He also refuted the allegation that he did it to boost his ailing popularity. Pong starred in movie classics "Gita Cinta Dari SMA" (Love Song from High School) and "Puspa Indah Taman Hati" (Beautiful Flower of the Garden of my Heart).
“I'm sick and tired of popularity. I had enough of it a long time ago,” he said.
