Some 15,200 families in Bogor and Depok are having their water supply disrupted for three days as the local water company, Tirta Kahuripan, replaces some of its old pipes, the company said on Tuesday.

Tirta Kahuripan spokesman Hasan said the water supply would be disrupted from Tuesday until Thursday.

“This is to allow the replacement of the Ciburial transmission pipes, which are about 90 years old, and to replace the pipe bridge support over the Cisadane River,” the spokesman said.

He said about 6,800 customers in Bogor district would be affected by the repairs, with another 6,300 in Bogor city and 2,100 in Depok.

In Depok, the areas affected include the Kopasus complex, areas along Jalan Raya Parung and the Telaga Kahuripan, Pertiwi and Jatijajar housing estates.

“For Bogor city, it covers the subdistricts of South, North and West Bogor, while for Bogor district, the affected areas are the subdistricts of Kemang, Ciomas and Cibinong,” Hasan said,

Tirta Kahuripan, he said, would provide 18 water trucks able to hold between 500 and 800 liters, to distribute water in the affected areas.

Tirta Kahuripan’s technical director, Daryatna, said the transmission pipes were already too old and were rusty and leaking.

“We want to prevent any fatal damage. If that happened, the repairs could take up to six months,” he said.

Daryatna said he expected the Ciburial repairs to be completed today while the rest of the work would be done on Thursday.

Hasan said 20 kilometers of pipes needed to be replaced.

“The costs of these repairs are already at Rp 1.9 billion [$210,000] just for the replacement of the pipes, while the losses from the disruption to the water supply are estimated to reach about Rp 269 million,” he said.

Elly Suhermina, 52, a resident of Sindang Sarin in West Bogor, said that as soon as she found out about the repair plans two days ago she stored away some water for the days when the supply would be disrupted.

“I had to buy two jerry cans of 50 liters each to store the water,” Elly said. Vento Saudale
