Forget the road. Later the road will need expansion. How about a 2 line monorail...Kuta to Seminyak and Kuta to Denpasar. Have parking structures in DPS and Seminyak. This will get people to walk, and not drive.

No need to build a road, the tourists are already running away from Bali. My Balinese friend is alreading complaining that tourists are not coming. No wonder with the tons of trash on the beaches. Who wants to go sunbathing on Bantar Gebang? The local government has to focus first on the trash problem. Why not starting by buying tractors to scrap the trash like we use on European beaches? Why the restaurant owners in Jimbaran are not cleaning the beach in front of their business? Why is there not a global approach to fix that problem? Bali officials are only worried about the money , so let hit them at the wallet. To save Bali, let's boycot Bali even if Balinese people have to suffer for a while, this is maybe the only way to give a future for their children.

@manado - the new road will be above the mangrove not above the palm trees :-). BTW both ideas are stupid and not environmentally friendly.

Oh please, where is actually Bali at with its public transportation and traffic management? Although I truly believe Dahlan's credibility, but seriously, can't the province government think a little bit of something, juuust a little bit, what the impact would be when the quantity of private vehicle on the street way outnumbers the public transportation? Ah I see, Bali government is too busy with politics. See they are super creative in politic maneuvering but when it gets to people's real life issues, the dumbness disease attack their brains. Why not building more roads in East and North Bali for god shake?

ps. I haven't seen any coverage on JG about the conflict the current Bali governor has with his vice governor, Puspayoga. Wouldn't that be interesting to follow, don't you think?

Denpasar. A landmark toll road project started on Wednesday in southern Bali with the government aiming to complete the project within a record 14 months.

“If we can finish it in 14 months, that would be fantastic. The Surabaya toll road of an equal length took 12 years to complete,” Minister of State Enterprises Dahlan Iskan said during the groundbreaking ceremony.

The Rp 2.4 trillion ($264 million) project is handled by a consortium of state-owned enterprises, including toll operator Jasamarga, which will shoulder 60 percent of the cost.

The 12-kilometer toll road is set to completed by May 2013, before the APEC Summit. Several international events will follow, including the Bali Summer Summit later in 2013 and the Asean Free Trade Area in 2015.

Dahlan admitted that the performance of SOEs has been extraordinary slow. On some projects, delays caused losses of up to Rp 400 billion per year.

He said the project was coordinating the work of SOEs and the local government, including the clearance of some mangrove forest areas to the issuance of permits. He said Bali could set an example for similar projects on other islands.

“I want Sumatra to become the next priority after Bali in toll road construction. Sumatra is experiencing fast economic development and the local government there is rich,” Dahlan said.

Minister of Public Works Joko Kirmanto said the new toll road would be elevated above the swamp using multiple-pile slab technology so that it does not damage the ecosystem or the mangrove forest.

“The technology will eliminate the cost of land clearance, which becomes by far one of the biggest stumbling blocks in Indonesian toll road projects,” he said.

The structural engineering is the same used for the Soedyatmo toll road in Cengkareng, near the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport which is also surrounded by swamps, said Jasamarga president Ahmad Tito Karim.

He promised the Bali road would have the best view of all the toll roads in the country.

“The toll road will offer the experience of driving above the seaside with the green mangrove view outside,” Tito said, adding the project allocated Rp 2 billion to restore any mangrove forests damaged during construction.

The road will connect South Denpasar to Nusa Dua via Serangan and Benoa and have a special lane for motorcycles to help ease traffic congestion on the island.

Government figures show that in August, there were 2.5 million motor vehicles registered on Bali, 87 percent of which were motor bikes.

Traffic queues on the island stretch as long as 5 kilometers, especially near Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport.

The same consortium will also build an underpass road to reduce traffic loads at tourist areas, including Sanur, Kuta, Nusa Dua and the airport.

The 800-meter underpass will cost Rp 136 billion and measure 18 meters wide and 5.2 meters high.
