The people of West Sumatra province celebrated on Wednesday night after their governor, Gamawan Fauzi, was officially announced as the new minister of home affairs.
West Sumatra provincial officials set up a huge TV at the government office and watched the president's announcement with local residents.
They cheered and applauded when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono announced the appointment. More cheers followed when Yudhoyono announced Patrialis Akbar, also from West Sumatra, as minister of justice and human rights.
Patrialis worked his way up from a humble beginning. He started out driving public minivans (angkot) and taxis in Jakarta. After graduating from Muhammadiyah University in Jakarta, he became a lawyer and got involved in politics by joining the National Mandate Party (PAN). He served in the House of Representatives from 1999-2009.
West Sumatra Deputy Governor Marlis Rahman told Metro TV he was very happy that two "Minang sons" were chosen by the president to hold important roles. The Minangkabau are West Sumatra's original inhabitants.
