Wild weather has been wreaking havoc in Indonesia, with tens of houses badly damaged after a tornado hit a village in Pesawaran, Lampung, on Sunday night and rainstorms causing flooding in Pekanbaru, Riau.
A villager named Nawi Abdullah told Metro TV it was raining hard when the tornado came. It circled around a local housing area for five minutes. The villagers heard loud buzzing sounds, but they thought it was an airplane, he said. They were panicked and ran out of the house when they found out that the noise was from a tornado.
The tornado damaged 39 houses and an elementary school. The villagers were still cleaning the debris from their houses on Monday. The damaged school building was not rebuit, however elementary students are due to undergo mid-term tests on Tuesday.
The school admistration hoped the local government will put up emergency tents so the mid-term test can take place as scheduled.
Rainstorms and bad weather also caused damage in Pekanbaru, Riau. Continuous rain since Sunday caused parts of the city to flood. Water reached 60 centimeters to one meter.
Residents were encouraged to evacuate their houses but they refused. Some residents took shelter on the second floor of their house or on the roof. They believed the flood would soon subside because the rain had stopped on Monday.
