I salute u TGIF! Truth is people are selfish and don't care about the poor. We can all make a difference by helping. When u can buy ur cigarettes or coffeee etc at a warung rather than alfamart etc.YOU can make a difference if u want to.

I don't know how they can sleep at night knowing that there are children out here that will probably just a small portion of corn today. Surely the poor deserved to be helped before they waste this money on renovations. Know this, in Indonesia the rich stay rich while the poor stay poor. When u see a beggar on the street remember this.. they didn't choose that life! Instead of looking at them in disgust, reach into ur pockets and give them something.1000 is better than nothing. It won't change the world but it might add some food to a hungry belly.

@Jeanne Hachette...are you kidding Aerogare 1 et 2 are still an eye sore!! But you are right no need to be repainted on bare concrete walls. However, the outdated interior of Aerogare 1 definitely needs renovation.

The plight of the poor once again fall on deaf ears. The amount of money can be allocated for welfare services toward the poor. However, the big wigs in the government don't think so.

Isn't caring for human beings regardless of gender, race or creed is something that Islam would regard highly? Why is this issue constantly ignored or not done enough to alleviate the poor?

Nobody lives in the office buildings after office hours. It is a place to work during working hours. Therefore why the need to renovate and beautify an existing solid presentable structure.

On another note there are ignorant religious Islamic radicals pointing to the West that the West are ruthless and not capable for caring for another human being.

In the West there are welfare system to help those unfortunate and helpless human beings. It wasn't inherited from religious studies. It comes naturally from a society who would respect and listen to the plight of the poor and help those caught in economic disparity

Maybe the've lost their marbles? After the piles of bad press accrued by the House of Representatives in the past year over pricey plans to build a new office tower followed more recently by uproar over the big ticket renovation of toilets and a  meeting room, the Jakarta City Council has confirmed plans for a Rp 180 billion ($20 million) renovation of its offices.

The council, known as the DPRD, is planning to spend Rp 80 billion to repair outer walls and install marble surfaces on some interior walls of its Central Jakarta building.

The other Rp 100 billion will be used to build a bridge that will connect the building to a neighboring one.

Two DPRD members on Thursday confirmed the plans, but both denied having any in-depth knowledge of them.

“The [renovation] fund exists, but it has never been discussed in the Budget Committee and suddenly it appeared in the 2012 Regional State Budget,” said Sanusi, a politician from Gerindra party.

DPRD deputy chairman Triwisaksana said that he had heard about the renovation budget once, but knew nothing further about the project.

The Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency (Fitra) blasted the planned renovation, calling it irrational and wasteful.

Fitra coordinator Uchok Sky Khadafi said that he failed to see how marble surfaces could be considered urgent needs.

“This is a wasteful project, and it only proves that the DPRD has lost its conscience,” Uchok said. “Renovating the building should not use a big budget, mainly for insignificant things.”

Urban analyst Amir Hamzah also criticized the budget plan, stating that it was not in line with the 1999 law on corruption in government.

“In the law, there are nine principles of government that need to be free from corruption, collusion and nepotism,” Amir said. “Among them are effectiveness and efficiency. If they cannot meet the criteria, there is indication of corruption.”
