486417enakajah, THANK YOU! Sometimes we jumped on the bashing too quickly all the dust is flying everywhere, thank you for clearing this up. U're right some things work despite the many things that don't work, and too much dust does blur out our eyesight.
Actually it is not a billion trees each year as far as I know. There has been for some years a promo to plant one billion trees. It works too. Go to any forestry department and say you want to plant some trees and they will be all over you like a cheap suit.
Last year my wife was involved in a promo for the company she worked for in Bali. They wanted to plant a thousand trees. She organized a village where the land was available and the people prepared to look after the trees. Went to the forestry dept and they said why not take two thousand... she did and they were free and the dept helped with all the paper work and transport and the trees were planted and are still going. Take you pick, fruit trees, shade trees anything you like and the Forestry Dept and into it like a rat up a drain pipe.
Some things do work here and this does. It may not be a billion a year- silly man- but the forestry dept do put their weight behind this. Lots of companies and organizations do it.
“Don’t mess with Indonesia as if our nation has no government, no people and as if Indonesia doesn’t want to save its environment,” he said during a speech at a Mother’s Day celebration.
Oh, so it does, does it? (I know there are people, not sure of the rest).
Bamboo grows much faster. Even ganja (can make paper with it and has medicinal properties).
Who plants these "billion trees a year" and where are they?
Yes one billion trees (if they really have even been planted in the first place) are going to take decades to reach maturity. I think time's getting a bit tighter than that SBY old bean.
How dare anyone criticse Indonesia.......*sarcasm*
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday criticized foreign environmental organizations that he claimed overly attacked Indonesian forestry policy.
“Don’t mess with Indonesia as if our nation has no government, no people and as if Indonesia doesn’t want to save its environment,” he said during a speech at a Mother’s Day celebration.
He said criticism is constructive, but Indonesia has been overly criticized.
While it is positive to maintain forests, he said that it was equally important to increase people’s welfare by creating forestry businesses, such as palm oil plantations.
“But if Indonesia is requested to close down all palm oil plantations, it will destroy Indonesia’s economy and millions of people will lose their jobs,” he said. “This is overwhelming.”
Indonesia has made several international media headlines recently after a controversial permit was issued by Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf for a pristine, wildlife-rich forest to be razed and replaced by a palm oil plantation.
Yudhoyono said all nations in the world have a moral obligation to contribute to the effort to save the environment, especially advanced nations where he claimed forests have almost disappeared.
“Indonesia plants a billion trees a year, and it should also be done by other nations for the sake of humanity worldwide.”
