Prosecutors on Tuesday demanded 18-year jail terms for each of the eight Iranians standing trial at the Denpasar District Court in Bali for smuggling 602 capsules containing crystal methamphetamine into the country.

The charges could carry the death penalty, but prosecutor Ni Made Ayu Citra Maya Sari told the court that the prosecution had taken into consideration the fact that the defendants had not been convicted of crimes in Indonesia before, had admitted their crimes and had shown good behavior during the investigation.

Those on trial were identified as Daryoush Omid Ali, Alireza Safarkhanloo, Bahman Mirzaei, Mehdi Alinejad Golestan, Mohsen Mohammad Argasi, Saeid Soltani Nabizadeh and Masoud Soltani Nabizadeh. Shabazi Saeid was not present during the trial.

The first seven suspects were arrested after customs officials searched Daryoush, a passenger on a Qatar Airways flight, at Ngurah Rai Airport on Dec. 8.

Police questioned the seven and found most worked as taxi drivers in Iran.

They are charged with attempting to smuggle 580 capsules containing crystal methamphetamine, weighing a combined 4.5 kilograms. The drugs had a street value of about Rp 10 billion ($1.1 million).

Shahbazi Saeid was arrested on Dec. 21, carrying 22 capsules containing crystal methamphetamine weighing 200 grams, worth about Rp 400 million.

The Denpasar Police’s forensic lab ran tests on the capsules and determined they contained crystal methamphetamine.
