The Jakarta Administrative High Court has upheld a 20-year jail term for senior prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan for accepting $660,000 in bribe money from a businesswoman, a court spokesman said on Friday.

The Anti-Corruption Court in September found Urip guilty of accepting bribe money from businesswoman Artalyta Suryani, with prosecutors claiming the money was intended to influence the outcome of an investigation into an embezzlement case involving banking tycoon Sjamsul Nursalim.

“The court of appeal has upheld the verdict by the Anti-Corruption Court on the graft case against prosecutor Urip Tri Gunawan,” Madya Suharja, the appeal court’s spokesman, told the Jakarta Globe.

“He is sentenced to 20 years in jail and fined Rp 500 million [$42,000],” he said.

One of the judges disagreed with the verdict, suggesting that Urip be sentenced to life in prison, Madya said, declining to reveal the judge’s name.

The 20-year jail sentence is the heaviest ever delivered by the Anti-Corruption Court.

“I have nothing to say, but I hope that when the judges delivered the verdict, it came from the depths of their hearts,” said Jasman Panjaitan, the Attorney General’s Office spokesman, in response to the appeal court verdict. “This is the most severe punishment ever delivered in a corruption case.”

Urip was caught by Corruption Eradication Commission officials outside Artalyta’s house with the money early in March, only a few days after his superior, Kemas Yahya Rahman, announced his decision to drop the Sjamsul case.

At the time, Urip was leading the investigation into Sjamsul, who was suspected of embezzling Rp 24 trillion from the central bank fund at the height of the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.
