Denpasar. Emboldened by the recognition of batik, the kris and angklung musical instrument as world cultural heritage items, Indonesia is proposing three more items for heritage status.

Harry Waluyo, director of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s resources division, on Monday said Balinese dance, Papua’s noken woven bag and the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah recreation park would be proposed to the United Nations’ cultural organization for international recognition in 2011.

“The three Indonesian cultural heritage items proposed are traditional Balinese dance, the noken and TMII,” he said, adding that the items better reflected the country’s cultural heritage outside of Java Island.

“The focus of the proposed Indonesian cultural forms is now being shifted outside of Java, namely Bali and Papua.”

Harry said there were nine traditional Balinese dances being proposed to Unesco, one for each district on the island.

The noken, he said, was iconic of the country’s easternmost province. Woven from the fibers of a plant related to the orchid, the noken is a large bag that is traditionally carried slung around the forehead. In Papua, it is used by tribal women to carry everything from roots and produce to young pigs.

Modern noken are now also produced with vibrant colors and patterns and sold in traditional markets across Papua for between Rp 15,000 and Rp 100,000 ($1.50 and $10).

“TMII is being proposed because it is a model for arranging non-object cultural heritage,” Harry said.

The deadline for entries to be considered by Unesco for the 2011 list of intangible world cultural heritage is March 31.

Harry said that aside from the three new proposals, it was expected that Unesco would also announce Aceh’s saman dance as a world cultural heritage in 2011 as well.

The saman is a dance featuring the synchronized movements of dancers sitting in a row. It has been used in Aceh as a medium to spread Islamic teachings.
