Pekanbaru. Police in Riau have recovered a fourth body from a freak accident that occurred on Friday at a paper mill in Tualang Perawang, Siak district.

In the accident at the mill run by Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper, a unit of industry giant Asia Pulp & Paper, a large tank holding 1,500 cubic meters of hot latex fell from a 10-meter-high tower onto employees below.

Adj. Comr. Azwar, the subdistrict police chief, said four people were now confirmed dead in the incident, while four others were seriously injured.

“We recovered the body of the fourth victim at 7 a.m. on Sunday morning,” Azwar said.

“Previously, we recovered three bodies, which we’ve already handed over to the respective families.”

Those killed have been identified as Sulaiman Hakim, 22, Erizal Suwondo, 25, Noprizal, 45, and Mushahar, 42.

Those hospitalized are Yasrin Effendi, 30, Ardianto, 25, Khairil, 24 and Ruben Napitupulu, 30. All are being treated at Eka Hospital in Pekanbaru, the provincial capital, for serious burns.

All eight men had been carrying out routine maintenance work at the site at the time of the incident.

Nurul Huda, a spokesman for Indah Kiat, said the company would pay the medical costs of those injured and compensate the families of those killed.

He added the company had not yet determined the cause of the accident, saying a police investigation was still under way.

“We’ve handed the case over to the police and we’ll let them do their job,” he said.

Nurul also said that production at the rest of the mill would proceed, while the site of the accident had been cordoned off by police.

Initial reports after the incident said the victims had not been treated immediately by the company’s doctors and had been forced to wait for a medical emergency response team to show up.

The reports also said those who died were killed instantly.
