Kuala Lumpur. The accuser in the sodomy trial of Anwar Ibrahim said he accepted a court’s surprise decision to acquit the Malaysian opposition leader on Monday.

“I respect the decision. I accept it with calmness,” Mohamad Saiful Bukhari Azlan, whose 2008 accusation that Anwar sodomized him triggered a long and politically charged trial, wrote on his blog.

“I will continue to remain calm, pray and be patient... If not in this world, then [justice will come] in the next,” wrote Saiful, 26, who was an aide to Anwar at the time of the alleged sex act.

Prosecutors have said they are waiting for the full verdict before deciding whether to appeal.

Saiful’s allegation came shortly after Anwar led an opposition alliance to historic inroads in general elections.

After a nearly two-year trial, a High Court judge acquitted Anwar saying DNA evidence submitted by the prosecution was too unreliable for a conviction.

The verdict surprised many political observers and even Anwar himself, who has vehemently denied the charge, calling it a government attempt to frame him and thereby remove him as a political challenger.

Sodomy is a crime in Muslim-majority Malaysia and punishable by up to 20 years in jail.
