Singapore. Some 44,000 maid employers got a shock recently when they received their annual Central Provident Fund (CPF) statements.

Those who pay a monthly levy of $170 had that amount doubled to $340. Others who pay $265 each month had it doubled to $530.

It turned out to be a printing error on the part of the CPF Board.

The error caused the statements to reflect twice the amount that employers had paid, said the board.

Corrected statements should reach affected employers by mail today.

It emphasized that despite the printing mistake, the correct levy amount had been deducted every month from the employers’ bank accounts.

A ‘records of payment’ (ROP) is sent annually in January to maid employers informing them of the levies paid in the previous year.

Those who were affected were employers who had changed their levy payment details last year, said the board. This includes changes in bank accounts or levy amounts.

About one-fifth of the 220,000 maid employers were affected.

Among them was housewife Susan Seow, 53, who employs an Indonesian maid.

“I saw it last week when I got the statement. It showed that I paid $530 each month from January to December 2011,” she said, adding that it is the first time an error of this kind has happened to her.

“I was going to call the CPF Board but I checked the bank account and the right amount was deducted every month,” she said.

Some maid agencies said they received calls from concerned employers over the last couple of days but advised them to contact the board instead.

Employer Victor Chan, who is in his 30s and hires a Filipino maid, said such errors “do happen.”

“Both the employer and the board should be diligent in checking and making sure it is right,” he said.

Employers who wish to check their foreign domestic worker levy amount for last year can also contact the CPF Board on 1-800-227-1188 during office hours or send an e-mail to FWL@cpf.gov.sg.
