Washington. Representatives of the European Union are slated to meet US President Barack Obama Monday at the White House to address the eurozone debt crisis, the US and EU governments said.

The two sides were also expected to discuss such hot button issues as turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa as well as possible joint measures against Iran's nuclear ambitions.

EU President Herman Van Rompuy, European Commission President Jose Munuel Barroso and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton were expected to attend. On the US side, US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was slated to participate.

The eurozone debt crisis has in recent months led to tensions between the United States and Europe. The Obama administration has criticized the slow political decision process at the EU. Conversely, Europe has balked at US criticism of its financial management at a time when the US is in the midst of its own debt crisis.

Still, the trans--Atlantic relationship in these economically difficult times is "more important than ever before," Barroso said, adding that the two sides are "strategic partners." Obama said he was looking forward to the meeting, in which a "broad spectrum" of common economic interests were expected to be discussed.
