Moscow. Russian provincial court on Friday upheld a ban on an election cartoon showing Prime Minister Vladimir Putin losing an arm-wrestling contest.

The drawing, appearing on flyers handed out by representatives of the Communist Party, violated election law because Putin had not given his permission for his image to be used in the brochure, a court in the central city Nizhegorod ruled.

The drawing depicts the Russian leader, who is a top member of the country’s dominant United Russia party, losing a test of strength against Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov.

In the drawing, Zyuganov is winning the contest even though the leaders of two smaller Russian parties, both depicted as leashed dogs, are pulling on Putin’s side, an image of the handout published online by the opposite group kasparov.ru showed.

The court decision may be appealed and would be heard by Russia’s supreme court, the report said.

Direct public criticism of Putin is almost unheard of in Russia, which has been dominated by Putin’s United Russia political party for close to a decade.

United Russia is likely to obtain a solid majority in parliamentary elections, pollsters predict. The vote is scheduled for Sunday.

An group of independent Russian artists in May depicted Putin as a superhero dedicated to fighting evil and crime in a web comic strip.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is Putin’s sidekick in the graphic, entitled “Super Putin, a Man Like Any Other.” The strip is generally complimentary to the pair, but pokes fun of Putin’s study of judo and Medvedev’s enthusiasm for gadgets.
