Berlin. German customs officers got more than they bargained for when they asked a 22-year-old Australian to open his hand luggage on arrival at Munich airport — 36 live snakes in a fabric bag.

“This was the biggest seizure of live snakes at the airport in 10 years,” customs spokesman Thomas Meister told AFP.

The Australian, a fitness trainer whose named was not released, was going through the “green” nothing-to-declare exit when he was pulled over after flying in from Sydney on August 29, the spokesman added.

The snakes, all of them young pythons about 30 centimeters (11 inches) in length, included a rare “very valuable” white specimen, he added.

The smuggler was remanded in jail.
