Hanoi. A Vietnamese bus driver whose vehicle was swept away during floods that left 20 of his passengers dead or missing has been jailed for seven years after a trial on Thursday, a report said.

The court also banned Tran Van Truong from driving for five years after completion of his sentence, the Web site of Tuoi Tre newspaper reported.

Truong was arrested last October for violating traffic laws causing serious consequences, police said at the time.

Local media reported that the bus driver ignored warnings and entered a flooded part of the country’s main north-south highway in Ha Tinh province.

Eighteen passengers survived.

Tran Dai Nghia, the driver’s father, said at the trial that his son “couldn’t avoid the accident,” Tuoi Tre reported.

Including the bus casualties, flooding sparked by heavy rains left at least 74 people dead in four provinces of central Vietnam.
