Hanoi. Two centenarians in Vietnam are looking to break a record for the longest marriage in the world, officials said Thursday.

Huynh Van Lac, 110, and his wife Nguyen Thi Lanh, 106, broke the national record for their marriage of 82 years last week, Le Tran Truong An, director of Vietnam Records Book Centre, said.

“We will submit the longest recorded marriage to the Guinness World Records after finishing all the paperwork,” he said.

Lac said the secret to his long marriage was knowing how to live with each other and avoid quarrels.

“People should know how to share their happiness and sadness with each other,” he said.

Lanh said it was important to “exercise regularly and try to think positively.”

Their daughter, Huynh Thi Hoa, 71, said her parents had a good lifestyle and loved each other very much.

“Despite their age, my mother still likes taking care of my father by herself, with no help,” she said.

According to Guinness World Records, Herbert Fisher and Zelmyra Fisher from the United States were married for 86 years. Herbert died early this year.
