A35-year-old man died and three other people, including an infant, were injured on Thursday when a two-meter-high wall collapsed on them in Cengkareng Timur, West Jakarta.

Police said strong winds caused the dilapidated wall along Jalan AMD to collapse, instantly killing Iwan Setiawan.

Comr. Ruslan, chief of the Cengkareng Police subprecinct, said Iwan was in the area buying birds as a birthday present for his child.

Iwan’s body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta. It was not immediately clear if the victim’s family had already claimed the body.

“Strong winds caused the wall to collapse. The fact that the wall was old and damaged also contributed to its coming down,” Ruslan said.

Those injured included a 6-month-old boy, Salfa Fadillah, who sustained serious injuries. The other victims were identified as Tan Yulia, 31, Salfa’s mother; and a local resident, Ojat Sudrajat.

All three are being treated at the Cenkareng public hospital.

“Witnesses said Salfa was being fed by his mother when the incident occurred. The mother was working in the area selling small cakes,” Ruslan said.

The wall was built in the 1980s to act a barrier between a two-hectare plot of disputed land and a residential area, the officer said.

He said police hoped to question the landowners but would have to wait because they are not in Jakarta.

Nurjani, the Cengkareng Timur community head, said he was not sure who should be held responsible for the incident.

“I do not know what the legal dispute over the land is about. What I know is that the land was owned by a man named Darwis. Nothing else,” Nurjani said.
