The first two pairs of independent candidates planning to run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election registered officially on Wednesday, only to be turned away because their documents were incomplete.

Mulyo Wibisono and deputy governor candidate Ngadisah were the first to register with the Jakarta Regional Election Committee, but they lacked a list containing signatures of at least 407,345 supporters along with photocopies of their ID cards.

Mulyo, a retired Navy first admiral and former head of the Strategic Intelligence Agency, and Ngadisah, a former rector of the state Home Affairs Academy, were told to return with the documents.

Dedi Iryanto and Atma Sanjaya, the second independent pair to register, were also told to return after they had rearranged their list of supporters so that it was organized by the urban wards from which the voters hailed. Dedi is a trader and Atma is a former deputy mayor of North Jakarta.

The registration for independent candidates kicked off on Wednesday and will close on Sunday, while registration for candidates on political party tickets opens on Monday and closes on Tuesday.

This is the first year that independents have been allowed to run in Jakarta. The final list of candidates will be announced on May 10, while election day will take place on July 11.
