Jakarta is to expand its Car Free Day program from once a month to once a week.
The announcement follows an announcement over the weekend of the trial of a new system banning vehicles from certain roads in Jakarta on certain days, depending on whether the number plate of the vehicle is odd of even.
Three years ago, the Jakarta city administration introduced Car Free Day on the last Sunday of every month along Jalan Sudirman and Jalan Thamrin. It runs from 6 a.m. to midday.
Speaking on Sunday, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo told Berita Jakarta, the city’s official news portal, that the city, “god willing”, would announce the expansion of the Car Free Day to coincide with the city’s 484th anniversary on June 22.
Fauzi said the move was in response to the positive feedback received regarding the scheme and a number of requests to expand it.
He said the main message was for citizens to switch to walking or bikes, or public transportation for longer journeys.
