The Jakarta city administration will provide legal aid to a city official who has been named a suspect in the Metro Tanah Abang mall collapse, Governor Fauzi Bowo said on Wednesday.

“As a member of the staff, we would definitely prepare legal aid — which is his right,” he said.

Erry Wijaya, the Tanah Abang sub-district head of the Building Monitoring and Control Agency, was named a suspect on Tuesday by Jakarta Police after previously being questioned as a witness along with five other suspects.

The five others are the building owner from PT Rointa Eka Jaya, a consultant from PT Trimatra Jaya Persada, a structural consultant from PT Susanto Cipta Jaya, a contractor from PT Jagat Baja Prima Utama and an architectural consultant with PT Megatika International.

Fauzi emphasized that the availability of legal aid did not mean that the governor was offering any form of protection to the suspect.

The Dec. 23 incident killed four people and injured 15.

It occurred after a toilet block under construction at the complex collapsed.

The toilets were not included in the blueprint of the development and no permit was granted for their construction.

Jakarta Police Spokesman Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said on Tuesday that the report from the Central Forensic Laboratory pointed to possible planning and construction errors as causes of the collapse.

“Technically, the structure was substandard, which led to its collapse when it was unable to bear the weight,” Boy said.

The city’s Building Monitoring and Control Agency (P2B) has sealed off the construction site because of the incident.
