After serenading screaming teenage groupies in his courthouse holding cell, alleged serial killer and emerging celebrity Verry Idham “Ryan” Heryansyah said on Monday he was ready to die as prosecutors asked for the death penalty during his ongoing trial for the first of at least 11 murders.

“Everybody is going to die sometime. I’m ready for all the consequences of my actions,” Ryan told reporters after his trial adjourned at the Depok District Court in West Java Province, adding he would leave it to the judges and God to decide his fate.

Ryan is on trial for murdering Heri Santoso on July 11, 2008, at his apartment in Depok, cutting up his body and then dumping it in South Jakarta.

He has confessed to the murder, as well as killing 10 other people and burying their bodies in the backyard of his parents’ home in Jombang, East Java Province. Most of the victims, which included a 3-year-old girl, were decapitated or mutilated.

Ryan was arrested at his apartment in Depok in July 2008, and his confession to police shocked the nation. However, he has now obtained notoriety and cult-like status, recently publishing a book titled “Confessions: The Untold Stories of Ryan” and signing a recording contract.

Before Monday’s court session began, 20 teenage schoolgirls in uniform visited Ryan, requested he sing and screamed wildly as he belted out a version of his song “Bebaskan” (“Release Me”). He also signed autographs and had his picture taken with the students.

During the trial, the prosecution contended that Ryan killed Heri in a jealous rage after the victim made comments about Ryan’s gay lover, first stabbing him repeatedly with a knife and then finishing him off with a crowbar.

“The victim saw the picture of Novel Andreas, the defendant’s lover, and said he wanted to date Novel,” lead prosecutor Budi Hartawan Panjaitan told the court. “The defendant was outraged.”

He said Ryan repeatedly stabbed Heri with a kitchen knife and continued his assault after the victim collapsed onto a sofa bed. Ryan then dragged Heri into the bathroom and put him under a running shower.

“Upon learning that the victim was still alive, the defendant stabbed him again,” Budi said. “The defendant then picked up a crowbar and struck several blows to his head and skewered him in several places.”

Ryan then allegedly cut Heri’s body into several pieces, stuffed them in two bags and dumped them in an open space in the Pasar Minggu area of South Jakarta.

However, the defendant blundered by using the victim’s credit cards to purchase a mobile phone and a television set, which led to his arrest two days later.

Police also arrested Ryan’s boyfriend, Novel, who helped dispose of Heri’s body and sell several of his belongings. Novel was sentenced to one year in prison for being an accessory to murder.

Prosecutors have dismissed claims by defense lawyers that Ryan suffered from mental illness and committed the murder without sound judgment or while hallucinating and therefore could not be held responsible.

Several psychiatrists who assessed Ryan’s mental state found that he was not mentally ill, but did have an abnormal aggression. They also said that Ryan was a psychopath, and told the court that he was very likely to repeat violent actions if provoked.

Even if he is acquitted, Ryan is wanted in East Java in connection with the murders in Jombang.

“Physically, I’m very tired to face the Jombang trial, but mentally, I am ready,” Ryan said after Monday’s session.

The defense is scheduled to present its arguments when the trial resumes on March 30.
