Police in Bogor have arrested a travel agent for allegedly conning a group of 15 postgraduate students out of Rp 105 million ($11,760) for a trip to China that never materialized.

Adj. Comr. Iman Imanuddin, the Bogor Police’s chief of detectives, said on Thursday that the suspect, Chintia Citra, 35, had charged the students from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) Rp 7 million each for the trip that was supposed to take place last November but failed to materialize.

Iman said Chintia had claimed to the students that she represented a travel agency in Bogor, but she had been fired from the agency two months earlier.

The students, who were supposed to have taken part in an exchange program with a Chinese university, missed out on the program and reported Chintia to the police in January.

Iman said it was possible that Chintia worked with several accomplices to pull off the scam.
