"unlike Palestine, the made up Muslim state that didn't exist until the latter half of this century."

"Shut up about the crusades. They were trying to get their land back 400 yrs after Muslims took it" (-Lauren-).

Lauren, are you serious about Palestine and the Palestinians? Really? I think you are just as bad as the Islamic radicals...All forms of extremism are the bane of humanity and the US and Israel are not immune.

JPB, your comments are purely reactionary with no logical basis at all. Indonesia is a ruined country, so sad. I wonder if it will ever improve...Anyone that thinks Indonesia has improved in any way since "Reformasi" is kidding themselves. I have met many intellectuals in Indonesia that are as apathetic and naive as the "orang kecil." Education is the only hope for Indonesia, and as far as I can see educational institutions in Indonesia don't teach common sense.

Jpb, you not answering the question. Your simply saying that the world can have 50 versions of islamic cultural norms. Now answer the simple question.

JPB - low or negligible education/poverty/corrupt government/oppressive interpretation of religion - seems as though Indon has ticked most of the pre-requisite boxes ticked already. You would do well to educate yourself before making a fool out of Islam on these forums.

marko taliban has nothing to do with Indonesia. what I mentioned before are things already applicated in Indonesia or already part of the cultural norm. Please do not compare Indonesian muslim with taliban.. taliban is the way they are now mainly due to very low or negligible education.. a direct effect of decades of the west's proxy war in the area.

A rally held to protest the violent tactics used by some religious groups and the Islamic Defenders Front in particular was cancelled shortly after getting underway after rumors surfaced that hardliners were en route to the scene and scuffles broke out in the crowd.

One organizer said that the decision to abort the rally was made due to fears of a violent confrontation after police notified protesters that they would be responsible for their own safety if members of the hardline group, known as the FPI, came to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta.

One spokeswoman, Ririn Sefani, said police told her: “If something happens [after the FPI comes to HI], that’s not our responsibility.”

“Now, is that appropriate for [the police] to say such a thing?” Ririn said.

Police and photographers milled about as a scuffle broke out at 4:45 p.m., disrupting traffic in the busy thoroughfare, but it was unclear who was involved.

Around 150 protesters were at the scene initially, with some holding signs that read “Indonesia Tanpa FPI” (“Indonesia Without FPI”)

Organizers announced that they couldn’t risk the possible outbreak of violence, and said they would be heading to the Jakarta Legal Aid Foundation (LBH Jakarta) to hold a press conference.

Fifi Widyawati, one of the spokespersons, thanked supporters for coming out said she appreciated their courage.

The story is developing.
