Police are calling in a psychiatrist to determine the mental state of an elementary school student accused of stabbing a schoolmate over a stolen mobile phone.

“We will call on a psychiatrist to check the perpetrator’s sanity, to find out how an underage child could carry out such a stabbing,” Jakarta Police spokesman Rikwanto said on Monday.

The student, identified only as A., is in police custody after being arrested for stabbing a schoolmate, S.M., 12, with a 30-centimeter kitchen knife. The victim is still in intensive care.

A. reportedly stabbed the victim after S.M. had reported him to school authorities for stealing a mobile phone belonging to S.M.’s parents.

Rikwanto said the police would consider handing the case over to the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI).

A request by the commission’s deputy chairman, Asrorun Niam Sholeh, on Monday suggested that if A. apologized to his victim and if his family financially compensated S.M.’s family for medical bills, the police might consider prioritizing rehabilitation over punishment.
