We asked: Would you support a new smoking ban in Jakarta? How far should smokers be controlled?
You replied:
I, a nonsmoker, strongly support that the ban be enforced as quickly and firmly as possible.
Yen, Jakarta
Seeing as smoking is only slightly less widespread and endemic than corruption in Indonesia, I see no hope of this ban changing people’s behavior.
David North, Jakarta
Considering that Jakarta is one of the most polluted cities on the planet and just breathing the air must be the equivalent of 20 smokes a day, it really can be only seen as a gesture, and rather a pathetic one.
What about those buses than spew out thick black deadly poisonous smoke? Why don’t you do something about those, Mr. Governor?

This law will just give the police another opportunity for extorting some pocket money.

Unless they can enforce it, it will be like all the other laws in Indonesia: a complete waste of time and money. I for one am up for a complete ban in eating places for a start. There is nothing worse than having to smell smoke during eating.

We asked: Are you worried about a second global crisis or do you think the selling will end soon?
You replied:
The stock market is just gambling, and as such, it has its ups and down. One never wins every time.
Justine, Jakarta
No, our market, experience shows, is pretty insulated from what affects other international bourses. It may drop now, but it will not be long before it catches up again.
Gancar, Jakarta
