Your View: Prioritizing Local Gas, Floating Gas Terminals

We asked: Do you think the government is committed to prioritizing domestic gas demand?

You replied:

I’ll believe it when I see it. There are too many interests at play in that sector.
Ganjar, Jakarta

How often have we already heard that in the past? The reality is that with higher prices abroad, gas will more likely flow overseas. Why can’t the government come up with a stricter domestic supply obligation for gas producers? They have enjoyed our riches for so long already and it is high time that they cut their profits a bit for the interest of the nation.

Committed or not is not the question. If it is smart, the government will realize that gas is an important component for many productive industries. Failure to assure a steady supply of the commodity for our home industries will hold down production and our economy can only but suffer from this.
Ade Susilawati, Jakarta

They better be committed to this. How can the country achieve its high growth targets if the productive sector is hampered by uncertain gas supplies, rising electricity prices and other unconducive factors? However, the government should also realize that meeting domestic gas demand should not be accompanied by plans to raise its domestic price.

We asked: Do you believe that the floating LNG terminals will help alleviate the nation’s gas shortages?

You replied:

Anything to help the country overcome its gas supply problem should be encouraged, and floating terminals definitively count as necessary infrastructure to boost production.

It is heartening that PGN is finally trying to take the matter of supply into its own hands. A bit late, but still a welcome move. Building those floating terminals will definitively help ensure a smoother gas supply.
