Be the first to write your opinion!

We asked: Do you believe smoking should be forbidden, or should it be up to your conscience?

You replied:

What is the purpose of forbidding smoking anyway? If the purpose is to protect public health, then enforce the rule of no smoking in public spaces. But if it’s to forbid smoking for Muslims, it means religion is trespassing on personal freedoms. It’s like telling people not to eat hamburgers because they’re bad for your arteries. It’s ridiculous. Muslim leaders within Muhammadiyah should have a rethink.

It’s not just developed nations that have banned advertising. I think every other Asean nation now bans it and most ban smoking in restaurants, bars, public transportation and offices. Indonesia is an anachronism and one wonders how much money changes hands in Senayan every year to keep it that way.

I’m a smoker myself and a non-Muslim, but I fully support this fatwa. Indonesia has been a true heaven for smokers. People can smoke anywhere and anytime, and it’s very cheap.

To deal with this situation, we must follow what people in Europe, the United States and Singapore are doing. First, limit smoking by the imposition of heavy penalties for every violation. Second, increase the price of cigarettes by 10 or 20 times.

I think smoking should be left to our conscience. Someone should put an end to the claims by the antismoking brigade with all their data about smoking-related deaths and diseases. There is no way to prove the veracity of the claims they make in their data. They never explain the details behind their statistics. Has the Indonesian Council of Ulema got nothing better to do. It would be better if it spent its time improving the welfare of Muslims.

Fatwa or no fatwa, smoking should be made illegal in all public places and idiots who still smoke should be slapped with a hefty fine.
