Resolutions — remember those? Chances are, most of the promises made on New Year’s Eve didn’t take long to fall by the wayside. So the people behind the Indie Artspace gallery are holding an exhibition to remind us of our promises made not so long ago. And they are doing it through that most elementary of reminders: The ubiquitous, adhesive, yellow Post-it note.

The event, officially titled “RESOLUSI 2012: Post-It Group Art Exhibition,” will be held at the Indie Artspace gallery at the fX Lifestyle X’nter in Senayan, South Jakarta. Featuring six new artists, the exhibition opened last Saturday and will continue until Feb. 11.

The artists each have their own take on the Post-it theme. Some incorporate the notes as part of the works themselves. Many use the Post-it notes as a canvas on which to illustrate.

Indie Artspace founder Adri Tirtoarrazaq said the exhibition was triggered by his own curiosity about how different people, particularly artists, lead their lives.

“I was interested in finding out whether people faced each year with new prayers and hopes, or if they just went with the flow,” he says.

For Adri, the exhibition also promotes the thriving gallery and the new artists involved with it. But mostly, he wanted to remind artists that their zeal for art, just like resolutions, could lead to great things if pursued “with real passion.”

Adri’s concept paid off, with the artists contributing what he believes are yet undiscovered parts of their artistry.

“You see that the artists, through their contributions, engage in different manners,” he says. “Some take their portrayals of resolutions seriously, while others are more jovial in their approach. It’s a rare display of art in which they are encouraged to dig up their personal relationships, which has a lot to do with each artist’s resolutions.”

Artist Dhanny Sanjaya certainly sees the opportunity to display his comically skeptical outlook toward New Year’s resolutions in general.

“Resolutions are something that should be done by someone for his or her own good,” he says. “But for me, personally, resolutions are hard to follow up on. So I created this piece titled ‘26 (Bull****) Resolutions for 2012,’ which is about silly resolutions that I’ve had in my 26 years of being on this earth.”

The piece is creatively presented, as a booklet of Post-its with different pages featuring different resolutions.

Resatio Adi Putra’s contribution has a similarly catchy title: “Choose a Big F***ing Television.” It is a collage displaying an anthropomorphic polar bear resting against a television, set against a rather absurd backdrop. “The television represents prosperity, which is what I hope for this year. And the polar bear represents a relaxed-looking beast that can be fierce when the situation requires it, which is also how I hope to be,” Resatio explains.

Wickana L. Dewi’s contribution, titled “Airwalker,” has a soothing illustration of a little girl sitting on a large balloon in the sky and holding a butterfly net, drawn in monochromatic blue. It suggests a carefree attitude, which Wickana says is what she was going for.

“It represents being able to enjoy life without having to have a specific goal, but at the same time still being ready to ‘catch’ every opportunity when it comes,” she says.

For others, the sheer limitations of the novel medium end up yielding unexpected results.

“The concept definitely forced us to be more creative,” says Pamela Halomoan, whose contribution is titled “Crocolution,” and shows cutesy illustrations of her and her family running through a variety of activities she plans on doing this year.

Adri sees a single theme running through the exhibition, which is hope for the year ahead.

His own hope is that the exhibition will positively encourage people to focus on achieving what they set out to do this year. “It’s about daring to dream.”
