Actor Sean Penn was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to undergo anger management counseling on Wednesday after pleading no contest to a charge arising from a confrontation with a photographer last year.

Penn, 49, a two-time best actor Oscar-winner for his performances in “Mystic River” and “Milk,” must also perform 300 hours of community service in connection with the Oct. 2 incident. Penn’s plea related to a misdemeanor charge of vandalism. A second misdemeanor charge of battery was dismissed. Penn must also stay 100 yards away from the photographer involved in the altercation. The actor has a history of violent confrontations with photographers. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail in 1987, serving roughly half that time behind bars, after attacking a photographer on a film set.
