‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Unveils Itself to Jakarta Audience
After touring the world for decades and setting several box-office records, “The Phantom of the Opera” is coming to Jakarta this Valentine's Day.
Arguably the most famous musical in history, “The Phantom of the Opera” marks the first international musical production Jakarta has seen in a long time. The musical, produced by Big Daddy Entertainment, will play at Nusa Indah Theater, Balai Kartini, from Feb. 14 to March 3.
Attendees will enjoy a two-and-a half hour performance and be serenaded with enchanting songs composed by Ivan Jacobs. Ivan himself has written a new song for the performance to be debuted in Jakarta, it's called the Music of Life.
“The Phantom of the Opera” is based on the French novel “Le Phantom de l’Opera” by Gaston Leroux. The classic has become more familiar to Indonesians since its 2004 screen adaptation starring Emmy Rossum as the angelic songstress Christine Daae and Gerard Butler as the mysterious figure behind the mask.
Until now, Indonesians could only enjoy theatrical musicals, with the exception of home grown productions, in neighboring countries like Singapore. The city-state, which has hosted internationally acclaimed musicals such as “Wicked” and “The Lion King,” to name a few, has become a destination for Indonesians willing to splurge on the best entertainment experience.
Indonesians are known for their love of music and entertainment. You are unlikely to find an empty venue when live music is featured. From open talent night at dangdut cafes and guitar-clad street performances to the middle and upper-class playgrounds of Kemang, chances are you’ll find people gathering to enjoy the music or joining in the fun.
In other words, theater lovers in Indonesia will go to great lengths to satisfy their need for amusement. With “The Phantom of the Opera” setting foot in Jakarta this month, the capital’s entertainment enthusiasts hope it will pave a way for other international musical productions to be held here, allowing them to enjoy the show without spending extra cash for airfare.
