Malaysia will begin cross-trading shares with Thailand by the second half of next year, followed by Singapore and the Philippines, in a regional drive to lure more overseas funds, the head of Malaysia’s exchange said.
“That’s the timeline we’re working towards,” Bursa Malaysia chief executive Yusli Mohamed Yusoff said on Friday. “We’re all committed to doing this. It’s very important that brokers are going to use this platform that we’re going to create.”
A Southeast Asian trading link may help trim costs, attract foreign investors and compete with the emerging markets of China and India. On Feb. 23, 2009, the exchanges of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines signed a preliminary agreement to develop links for cross-border trading among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Singapore and the Philippines will follow soon after Thailand, though not necessarily next year, Yusli said.
