City police are close to completing their investigation into a man accused of killing and sexually abusing 14 street children.

The case of Bayquni, who had befriended and offered shelter to his alleged victims, will go to prosecutors next week, Adj. Sr. Comr. Nico Afinta, chief of the Jakarta Police’s violent crimes unit, said on Tuesday.

“We are still completing the files,” he said.

Nico said the body count attributed to the man whose nickname, Babe, means “father” in the Batawi dialect, will not go higher.

“There are no additional victims. The total number is 14,” he said.

The accusations against Bayquni, 49, focused renewed concern on the perils faced by thousands of street children in Jakarta and elsewhere. Welfare officials say street children are routinely exploited and sexually abused.

Police on Monday re-enacted the murder of Ardiansyah, a 9-year-old who lived with Bayquni for six months before he was slain. The reconstruction took place near the East Flood Canal in Cakung, East Jakarta, where the child’s body was found on Jan. 8, and at Bayquni’s house in Pulogadung, also in East Jakarta.

“The reconstruction was done to match the suspect’s testimony with information found at the scene,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said. “We want to clear up questions about how he killed the victim, the murder weapon and so on.”

The accused killer and his lawyer attended the re-enactment, along with some 150 security personnel.

The police sought to trace the movements of the victim and Bayquni, from their first meeting in the Pulogadung Trade Center to Bayquni’s house and eventually to the murder and dismemberment of the victim’s body.

At the house, Boy said, Bayquni demonstrated “how he finally finished off the victim.”

Police then continued their gruesome journey to the edge of the East Flood Canal where, police say, Bayquni dismembered the boy’s body. Ardiansyah’s body was eventually found nearby in a cardboard box.

Boy said other crimes attributed to the accused killer would also be re-enacted if necessary.

Bayquni was arrested in early January after the discovery of Ardiansyah’s remains. The one-time street vendor told reporters shortly after his arrest that he “felt satisfied” when he killed.

“I lost control,” he said at the time.

His lawyers said later that their client had admitted to killing all of the victims attributed to him.
