Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission on Monday detained the governor of Riau Islands as a suspect for allegedly engaging in graft during the procurement of fire engines for the province.

Johan Budi, a spokesman for the commission, also known as the KPK, said Ismeth Abdullah was arrested after hours of questioning at the KPK headquarters, and would be held at Cipinang Prison for the next 20 days.

Ismeth was allegedly involved in a corruption case related to the provision of fire engines that caused Rp 5.4 billion ($583,000) in state losses when he served as head of the Batam Island Special Industrial Zone Development Authority, Johan said.

The procurement was allegedly held without the required tender process, and private firm PT Satal Nusantara also marked up the prices, he added.

Ismeth will face charges under the 2001 law on corruption. The case also involves a number of other officials, including Oentarto Sindung Mawardi, the former director general for regional autonomy; Hengky Samuel Daud, Satal Nusantara’s president director; Danny Setiawan, the former governor of West Java; and Abdullah, the former mayor of Medan.
