The district prosecutors in Tangerang received free medical service from Omni International Hospital, now at the center of a media uproar after pursuing civil and criminal charges against a mother of two, a lawyer for the woman said Monday.

“All prosecutors in the Tangerang district office are entitled to free medical checkups — and pap smear tests for female officials — at Omni International Hospital,” said Slamet Yuwono, a lawyer for Prita Mulyasari, who has spent three weeks in detention for allegedly defaming the hospital.

“We have the documents with the official stamp of the Tangerang prosecutors’ office as evidence. The document clearly says the facility is for free,” he told the Jakarta Globe.

Earlier in the day, Slamet visited the Attorney General’s Office to seek protection for his client and demand an investigation into the Tangerang office.

“We hope the AGO will take stern measures against corrupt district prosecutors because this could set a bad precedence in law enforcement,” said Slamet. “Those who are found guilty of conspiring with Omni must be fired.”

Slamet said chief defense lawyer Otto Cornelius Kaligis was very likely to present the documents on the free facilities during the court hearing on Thursday, when the lawyers will read their defense.

Also on Monday, the Attorney General’s Office sent a team to Tangerang to question the local prosecutors over their handling of the controversial defamation case.

The team, led by Ajad Sudrajad, inspector for general crime division at the AGO, questioned a number of district prosecutors, from office head Suyono down to prosecution team member Rakhmawati Utami.

The district prosecutors have been very accommodating to the legal suit lodged by Omni against Prita, who in her e-mail to colleagues criticized the hospital for unprofessional conduct when she received treatment for dengue fever.
