Surabaya. Education Minister Mohammad Nuh is calling for comprehensive data to be collected on the number of children with special needs in order to determine how many schools were needed to cater to them.
“Their number is small and thus must be easy to map out on the number of children with special needs,” the minister said at Klampis Ngasem Inclusive Elementary School in the East Java capital on Monday.
Nuh also said the school fees for children with special needs were too high because many teachers at special schools were contracted and thus paid directly by parents.
He said the government was considering giving more school operational assistance funds (BOS) to such schools.
“You see it yourself that schools accepting children with special needs require more teachers,” Nuh said.
“Sometimes they need one teacher for three students, or sometimes one teacher for one student. This means those schools need more teachers and thus need more financial assistance.”
Although he did not say how much aid would be provided, he did promise that teachers would be integrated into the government system.
