The government has repatriated 1,367 migrant workers from Middle Eastern countries since the start of the 100-day cabinet program, which ran from late October to Dec. 28.

“From their work countries, they were flown to Jakarta — and from Jakarta they were transported to their homes,” said Maswita Wijaya, deputy coordinating minister for women’s empowerment and child protection.

Maswita said a further 672 workers will be brought home from temporary shelters in the region on Jan. 17 and 19.

The government provided transportation from Jakarta to the workers’ homes in Central Java, East Java, West Java and West Nusa Tenggara.

Most repatriations were due to non-payment of wages or expired work permits, although some workers were said to have been involved in crime and others were suspected of being underage.

Maswita said the migrant workers were offered temporary shelter at Indonesian embassies in the Middle East while waiting for their documentation to be processed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that in the past three or four years 20,000 to40,000 workers were repatriated because of problems in work-placement countries.
