Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. An Indonesian postgraduate student who died on Tuesday at Kuala Lumpur’s Al Islam Hospital is suspected to have had swine flu, a source at the Indonesian Embassy said on Wednesday.
The student was identified as Tengku Abdullah Syahputra of Medan. An autopsy was carried out but hospital officials have not allowed relatives or friends to view the body.
The embassy source said Tengku was a student at The International Center for Education in Islamic Finance, and was believed to have been infected with the H1N1 virus by a fellow passenger on a flight from Medan to Kuala Lumpur.
However, hospital officials could not confirm whether Tengku, who was studying in Malaysia on a scholarship from Bank Negara Malaysia, had died of swine flu.
His wife, children and uncle arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday evening.
The Indonesian Embassy, the student’s relatives, colleagues and the management of the institute where he was studying have made preparations for the return of his body to Medan but it was not certain when that would take place.
Tengku’s relatives earlier called on Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Da’i Bachtiar to help speed up the process of returning the body to Medan.
Widyarka Ryananta, the attache for information, social and cultural affairs at the Indonesian Embassy, confirmed that the Indonesian student had died and that an autopsy was conducted.
