Members of the Corruption Eradication Commission paid their suspended boss a visit in jail on Wednesday to question him over allegations of misconduct.
Antasari Azhar was suspended from the commission, also known as the KPK, after he was named a suspect in the murder of state firm executive Nasrudin Zulkarnaen. Police allege that Antasari had met several times with Nasrudin, who was also a witness for the KPK.
On Wednesday, several officials from the KPK’s internal affairs department visited Antasari’s cell at Jakarta Police headquarters to clarify the situation.
Commission members said earlier that there were indications Antasari had breached the KPK’s internal code of conduct, but they wanted to hear Antasari’s side of the story.
Antasari’s lawyer, Muhammad Assegaf, said KPK officials arrived at the detainment facility at 11 a.m., adding that his client opted not to have his own lawyers present.
“Antasari told us to go home, so we don’t have a clue what was asked,” he said. KPK officials were also tight-lipped about the conversation.
“We are still gathering all the facts,” said the KPK deputy for graft investigation and prosecution, Bibit Samad Riyanto.
Separately, the KPK’s director of investigations, Ade Raharja, denied controversial claims Antasari made in a four-page letter written after his arrest. The letter alleged KPK officials took bribe money from fugitive businessman Anggoro Widjaja to refrain from naming him as a graft suspect. Ade was among those named in the letter. “I never received any bribe money from anyone or for anything,” he said.
