The National Police are seeking help from neighboring countries to ascertain whether a terrorist suspect they arrested last week is Husaini bin Ismail, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

“We are still investigating and we have not yet determined his citizenship. We are still asking for data from Singapore and Malaysia,” Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji, the National Police’s chief of detectives, told reporters.

Husaini is a Singaporean national wanted for his alleged involvement in a plot to hijack a plane in Bangkok and crash it into Singapore’s Changi Airport in 2001.

Susno said that the police still had seven days to determine the status of the suspect under the law, and added that they were also as yet undecided as to whether the man would be charged with immigration violations only or for offenses under the anti-terrorism law as well.

Husaini arrived in Indonesia with other terror suspects by ship via Medan, North Sumatra, in January 2002.

He was joined by Mas Selamat bin Kastari, Mohammad Hasan bin Saynudin, also known as Fajar Taslim, Ishak Sio Muhamed Noohu and Muhammad Rasyid bin Zainal Abidin.

Kastari, Noohu and Abidin were earlier arrested and charged with illegal entry and falsifying documents. They were deported to Singapore because they had not been linked with any acts of terrorism in Indonesia.

Hasan, however, was arrested and charged with killing a Christian high school teacher in Palembang. He is also among those charged with plotting to kill Catholic priests and to carry out bomb attacks in West Sumatra. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison in April.

A police source close to the investigation told the Jakarta Globe that they had also arrested a man identified as Amat Kastari in Central Java on Monday.

The source declined to comment whether Amat was related to Mas Selamat bin Kastari, saying, “We will explain later. We are still determining whether to go ahead and name him as a suspect or just as a witness.”

Mas Selamat is known to have four sons — Masyadi, Masyfu, Maskur and Mas’ud.

Police have already identified Saefuddin Zuchry, another suspected terrorist arrested by the Densus 88 antiterror squad in Cilacap, Central Java, on Sunday morning.

A police source also told the Jakarta Globe that they arrested another suspect they identified as Somad, believed to be Husaini’s younger brother, in Lampung on Monday.

However, Comr. Anwari of the Lampung Police told state-run Antara that the arrested suspect was Syamsul, 50.

“Syamsul is Singaporean and he is Kastari’s subordinate. He has been living in Lampung for three years together with his son, Umar,” Anwari said.

It remains unclear whether Syamsul and Somad are different individuals or the same person.
