The son of a wealthy businessman jailed in a corruption scandal has cried foul after the daughter of one of the nation’s most well-known generals was re-elected chairwoman of the National People’s Concern Party.
Sabar Ganda L Sitorus, the son of disgraced Batak plantation owner Raja DL Sitorus, held a news conference on Wednesday to complain about the party’s national meeting in Bandung from Monday to Tuesday, which saw Amelia Yani, the daughter of murdered Gen. Ahmad Yani, retain her position as head of the party.
Sabar, who was removed from the party prior to the meeting in an alleged dispute over the whereabouts of more than Rp 30 billion ($3.3 million) in campaign funds for last year’s legislative elections, said the meeting was illegal because two thirds of the party’s leadership board did not attend, as required under the party’s constitution.
“So the result cannot be approved because it is contrary to our internal regulation,” Sabar said.
He also alleged that his removal and that of other leaders was illegal.
Sabar said he and his supporters would immediately file a complaint with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights and the General Elections Commission (KPU).
Amelia denied the accusations, which she labelled as “lies.”
Though the party, also known as the PPRN, finished 15th in last year’s legislative elections with just 1.21 percent of the national vote, and has no legislators in the House of Representatives, it does have about 250 legislators serving on various Regional Representatives Councils (DPRDs). It is currently allied with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Democratic Party.
