At train derailment in East Java has injured dozens of passengers and caused the cancellation of at least four other train services, a railway company spokesman said on Tuesday.
The Mutiara Timur train, departing from Banyuwangi in East Java, derailed in the Pasuruan area en route to Surabaya, said Slamet, a spokesman for the East Java division of state-owned train operator Kereta Api.
Slamet suspected aging rail tracks as being a possible cause of the accident.
“The railway tracks were laid down in 1920,” he said, “They’re very old.”
The train left Banyuwangi for the six-hour trip to Surabaya at 10 p.m. on Monday. Five of its eight carriages, Slamet said, jumped the tracks, injuring at least 18 passengers.
He also said that the company had dispatched a train from Solo in Central Java to help with the evacuation.
Meanwhile, the commuter line in Jakarta was also disrupted after a truck crashed into an electricity pole near Duri Station, South Jakarta.
Sugeng Priyono, a Kereta Api spokesman for the Jakarta division, said that the truck had brought the pole down, shutting off electricity to the railway.
“All electric trains heading to the city were cancelled,” he said, adding that only one track was available for use by diesel-powered trains.
The Antara news agency reported that a team from East Java Police’s forensic department had begun investigations into the accident at Pasuruan.
The chief of the forensic team, Haryono, was quoted as saying that investigators were trying to determine whether the tracks collapsed under the weight of the train or because they were deliberately removed.
Weak maintenance of the country’s railway industry, as well as theft of rail tracks by scavengers, have led to a series of train accidents in Java and Sumatra.
Last week, two commuter trains collided in Bogor, West Java, killing an engineer and injuring around 38 passengers. The railway chief at the Transportation Ministry, Tundjung Inderawan, vowed he would take steps to ensure increased monitoring of all railway operations.
In June, an impromptu visit from the ministry to a train depot in Depok found that 10 trains and railway tracks near the depot were undermaintained.
The East Java accident forced the cancellation of the Logawa train from Jember to Purwokerto, the Sri Tanjung train from Surabaya to Banyuwangi, the Tawangalun from Surabaya to Jember, and the Cantik train heading to Jember from Surabaya.
