A 21-year-old woman who survived a police raid that killed suspected terror mastermind Noordin M Top in his Central Java hideout in September is scheduled to be tried soon, after police completed the charging documents and handed her over to prosecutors on Tuesday.
Putri Munawaroh, who was pregnant at the time of the attack, could be the second Indonesian woman to stand trial for terrorism in the country.
“She will be charged with illegal possession of explosives and arms and hiding information about planned terror attacks,” prosecutor Totok Bambang said. “After the raid, police found at least five sacks of explosive materials at her rented house in Solo.”
Dressed in a purple burqa, the suspect arrived at the South Jakarta Prosecutor’s Office accompanied by lawyer Asludin Hatjani.
“Prosecutors have two months to examine the case, but her case can go to trial any time soon,” Totok said.
She gave birth at a hospital while in custody, and was moved back to the National Police’s detention facility in Kelapa Dua, Depok, Totok said.
During the Sept. 17 raid at the house in Mojosongo, in the eastern part of the Central Java city of Solo, police killed four suspected militants: her husband, Hadi Susilo aka Adib, Ario Sudarso aka Aji, Bagus Budi Pranoto alias Urwah and Noordin.
According to police, Putri survived the heavy gunfire because her husband acted as a human shield for her.
Police had intensified antiterrorism operations after the twin hotel bombings in Jakarta in July that killed nine people, including the two suicide bombers. Noordin is suspected of having masterminded the attack.
At least six suspected militants were killed by the National Police’s Densus 88 antiterror unit after the bombings. Apart from the four victims in Solo, police killed two suspected militants in Bekasi, one in Temanggung and two in Tangerang.
Putri was the only survivor from the Solo raid, but she suffered a gunshot wound in her left leg. She refused to give herself up to the police, saying she wanted to die a martyr.
In 2005, a district court in Pasuruan, East Java, tried Noordin’s wife for harboring the militant and hiding information about his whereabouts. Mufiatun, believed to be Noordin’s second wife after his first marriage in Malaysia, was the first female to stand trial for terrorism.
