Yogyakarta. Gadjah Mada University ranks eighth on a list of Southeast Asia’s 100 top universities on the Web, according to international research institute Webometrics.

A spokesman for Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Suryo Baskoro, said that in addition to the Yogyakarta-based institution, three other Indonesian universities were included in the top 20. The three are the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), which placed 10th, Jakarta’s University of Indonesia, ranked 17th, and Surabaya’s privately run Petra Christian University, which was ranked 19th.

“At the national level, this is the third time UGM has topped the rankings as the best university,” Suryo said on Friday.

Webometrics is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Spanish Research Council, the largest public research body in Spain.

Suryo said Webometrics ranked the universities by measuring the number and quality of e-publications they put on their Web sites related to their academic activities.

“The institute [Webometrics] assesses the content of the Web sites using four primary parameters. These are the size of the Web site, its visibility, quality of published files and scholarly activities, which includes the volume of citations taken from the Web,” Suryo told the Jakarta Globe.

“This survey by Webometrics is partial in nature because it doesn’t look at the condition of the university as a whole, only its Web appearance. Nevertheless, we’re still proud of it,” Suryo said.
