I'm sorry, but this is retarded.

So I take it that this Koranic recital test implies that only people not only well versed in the Koran but also those who actually abide by its teachings are politicians in Aceh? So that means there are no corrupt politicians in Aceh right? Because they would have all sat the test.

Or may we presume that there are a just 'few' hypocrits - who publicly mouth words and then, contrary to what those words tell them to do and how to live, go off and lie and cheat and steal and swindle?

Surely not in holy Aceh?

Neither mere knowledge of the Koran or wearing the peci, or attendenace at the mosque or observing outward rituals makes a man righteous before God or his fellow men and women - but only one who hears the words, internalises them has them change his mind and heart and purifies them, modifies his way of life and does what the book tells him to do - especially towards the poor, the sick and the powerless. Such a man only is righteous before God.

Merely reciting words is not enough.

Three gubernatorial candidates and their running mates took part in a Koran-recital test on Tuesday as part of requirements to run for the highest office in the staunchly Muslim Aceh province.

Independent candidates Fakhrulsyah and Hendra Fadli, along with Zaini Abdullah from the Aceh Party, were tested at the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh on their memorization, tone and understanding of the verses.

Tengku Akmal Abzal, an official from the Aceh Independent Elections Commission (KIP), said a failure to attend the test or score a minimum 50 percent would put the candidates out of the running.

The results will be announced later this month.

The polls are scheduled for April 9.
